Who we are

The Boom! team is made up of part-time staff and volunteers, including our workshop leaders, our admin staff, and the board. You can find out more about us on this page.

Workshop leaders

  • Barry Neeson

    Barry runs Still Scribbling (our Monday workshops). He co-founded Boom! with Sara Thomas, and he still works closely with our board to develop our activities.

    Barry is a self-taught visual artist born and raised in Glasgow, with a strong background in Illustration and Modelling. You can follow him on Facebook, Instagram, and Etsy.

  • Bex Smith

    Bex leads Young Scribblers workshops at YPF with Consuelo and she also leads on Scribblers Academy.

    Bex is a multidisciplinary community artist who works with various groups across Glasgow. She has a particular interest in nature and how it can be utilised in her artistic practice.

    When she isn’t creating things, you can find her working outdoors or spending time with her fluffle of rabbits.

  • Pearl Kinnear

    Pearl is one our adult workshop leads, running our More Scribbling on Saturdays.

    Pearl is an interdisciplinary artist based in Glasgow who trained in Fine Art drawing and Painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, and completed my Masters of Fine Art in Belfast College of Art.

  • Consuelo Servan

    Consuelo R. Servan is an artist from Extremadura, Spain. Since 2012, she has been based in Glasgow, where she found a warm welcome and made it her home, developing her screen-printing practice.

    Consuelo has been working alongside Bex for the last few years delivering our Young Scribblers workshops at YPF.

Admin staff

  • Roisin Cross

    Roisin took over the role of Marketing & Administration Coordinator from Anna in August 2024. She supports Nina with the organisation of our regular activities. She looks after the Boom! website, social media, and newsletters.

    Roisin has previously participated in many Boom! workshops and has a passion for creating inclusive and fun communities. Her background is in Community Development, Capacity Building and Governance. She also works as an Office Manager and supports smaller charities where possible.

  • Alison Sommerville

    Alison joined us in August 2025 as our new Development & Partnerships Lead. She will be working with other organisations to help us grow in a sustainable way.

    Alison has worked in the third sector for many years managing and advocating for arts projects big and small to be freely available to all. She has a masters in Creative Writing from Glasgow University and understands the importance of creativity in our everyday lives. 

Board of Trustees

  • Sara Thomas

    Sara is the Chair of the Board. She co-founded Boom! with Barry back in 2017, and she’s played a huge role in driving our activity ever since.

    When not volunteering for Boom, Sara is a Programme Manager at Wikimedia UK, & does crew & volunteer management with both Kelburn Garden Party and the Scottish Wild Food Festival.

  • Helen Scott

    Helen sits on the board as a member of the local community we work in. Helen has been involved with various groups in and around the area for almost 20 years from baby groups to adults. She is passionate about her local area and loves being able to help those around her thrive and explore new things.

  • Linda Thomas

    Linda is Secretary to the Board and has been with BOOM! since its inception in 2017. She writes up minutes of the meetings and generally tries to keep the paperwork in order :)

    Linda is retired now after spending many years in management roles in small businesses. She has an MBA and loves volunteering, with experience ranging from being trustee of a UK-wide charity to helping out at local fundraising events – and everything in between.

  • Iain McWhirter

    Iain is our Treasurer, keeping an eye on our finances and making sure our workshop leaders get paid on time!

Boom! Community Arts is truly a community that has grown through the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, staff and artists and we wanted to take a moment to thank those who have worked with us in the past and helped shape who are are today!

Admin Staff:

Heather Meikle who supported our growth and development between 2020 an 2021as our Project Coordinator. Heather worked with the trustees to grow our workshops and community opportunities, creating a great foundation for our team to grow.

Anna Broomfield who supported us and our attendees between 2022 and 2024 as our Marketing and Administration Coordinator. Anna was a great addition to the team, working with Nina to make sure our website, socials and workshops were well looked after.

Nina Doherty who supported the growth and development of our organisation between 2021 and 2026. Nina started as our General Manager before moving into the role of Finance & Fundraising Lead. Nina saw the admin team grow from 1 post to 3 and ensured we had funding to grow over the years.

Trustees:

Louise Nolan supported us as a Trustee for many years, she is a passionate artist and works locally on creative interventions for community growth. You can follow Louise’s current project at Make it Glasgow who are working hard on Bella the Beithir at the Stockingfield Bridge.

Erin Friel is a rapper and performer from Springburn, Glasgow. She writes in her native tongue and performs with her unmistakable Glaswegian dialect. Erin is a storyteller at heart and draws inspiration from her experience and love for hip hop. Erin supported us as a Trustee between 2018-19.
